Tour de France - Astana leave out Pereiro for Tour

Spaniard Pereiro, who won the Tour in 2006 after American Floyd Landis was stripped of his title following a positive test for testosterone, has been in poor form this season.
"The team that will guide Alberto Contador on the road of the Tour de France is the result of a long collective team work," Astana manager Yvon Sanquer said.
Champion Contador, bidding for a third Tour title, will be helped in his challenge by Kazakh Alexander Vinokourov, Spaniards David de la Fuente, Jesus Hernandez, Daniel Navarro, Benjamin Noval, Italian Paolo Tiralongo, Ukraine's Andriy Grivko and Kazakh Maxim Iglinskiy.
The Tour de France starts on July 3 with a 8.9-km prologue in Rotterdam.

Joaquim Rodríguez crashes out of Katusha camp

Joaquim Rodríguez has gotten off to a rough start at his new home at Katusha.
The Spanish attacker crashed hard on a training ride Sunday on the second day of a training camp along Spain’s Mediterranean Coast, leaving him with 15 stitches and a doctor’s order to take 10 days’ rest.
Rodríguez — who switched from Caisse d’Epargne to Katusha to gain more opportunities to ride as a team captain — rode into some broken glass, punctured his front tire and landed hard on the shards.
Rodríguez felt dizzy after the crash and was transported to a local hospital for a check-up.
“It caused some pretty ugly cuts, one on the gluteus and the other on my thigh,” he said. “The cuts were deep, with a lot of blood. The cut to the gluteus was so deep you could see the fat. They took me to the hospital, where they gave me 15 stitches and told me to take at least 10 days off the bike.”
Other than the stitches and some other minor cuts and bruises, he wasn’t seriously injured.
Rodríguez returned to his home in Spain’s Catalunya and will rejoin his teammates once he heals, team officials reported.
Members of the Katusha team will remain in Calpe for another 10 days. Other team members are scheduled to go to Australia for the Tour Down Under (January 17-24) while others are racing in South America for the Tour de San Luís (January 10-22).

Theo Eltink announces retirement

Dutchman unable to find team for 2010
Theo Eltink has ended his career as a professional, he announced today on his website. The 28-year-old Dutchman's contract was not renewed by Skil-Shimano and his attempts to find a new team for 2010 proved unsuccessful.
"I had hoped this last month that something suitable could come along...but to no avail," Eltink said. "I have nothing to regret in my career. I have given it everything and can 100 percent look myself in the mirror."
Eltink turned professional for Rabobank in 2005 after a successful stint on the team's development squad. The Dutchman stayed with Rabobank for four seasons, 2005-2008, and moved to the Dutch Pro Continental team Skil-Shimano for 2009.
Eltink completed six Grand Tours in his professional career, finishing the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España three times each. His best performance was in the 2006 Vuelta where he finished 24th overall.
